Gran Age Online Review

E-mail Print PDF

mainThese past few weeks I've got myself hooked on Gran Age Online. It's pretty fun discovering all the new things this game has to offer. I was a bit hesitant to try it out after my horrible experience during the first Closed Beta Test, but alas, had nothing other than my usual games to play. So I decided to take the plunge and tackle Gran Age Online. Little did I know, I would grind this game until I was out of stamina and unable to continue any further. Just like all my other reviews, this one is filled with lots of videos for people who would rather sit back and watch videos instead of reading blocks of text.

So what, it's another 2D Maple Story, Mini Fighter and Viva Fighter looking game, right? If you're looking for something new or refreshing from any of these, then this may not interest you. But if you have an open mind, you might love this game even more than any of the aforementioned. I've actually grown to like it and it is my favorite game of the month. I felt as though the developers read my previous CBT preview/review and decided to follow up on the changes. Let's get down to business though, shall we?!

Playable Characters

I was a bit disappointed with the character customization, but this game is soon to become a cash shop game. Hopefully, there will be better choices then. Character Customization is very limited so expect to see some of your clones until you hit the next job tier or earn free obtainable wigs, costumes, and such.

There are four playable characters in Gran Age Online: Archer, Assassin, Knight and Magician. Gran Age's tutorial makes your character level 60 at the beginning, but don't let this tutorial fool you; the character they give you is not the final outcome of what your character will be like. Hell, I am a level 32 Pistoleer and my character is already way buffer and better than the tutorial character. Also, don't get turned off if you start to see crappy skills for your Tier 1 class. Each class can advance into one of the Tier 2 classes upon completing an easy dungeon quest at Level 20.

Controls

Arrow keys are used to move around, so you're pretty much set with this keyboard setup unless you go around changing your binds. However, default setup works the best IMO. X is your normal attack, Spacebar picks up items, C is to jump, Z is to block enemy hits. A>G, Q>T and 1-10 are all your skills and items. You can equip all the skills that you have learned. Aside from those you can also have your Chain Arts Cards and such. There are a lot more buttons, but you will eventually figure them out since the game is fairly simple. .

Combo'ing Crazy - Chain Art System & Cards

Gran Age Online wouldn't be fun at all if you can't pull off crazy combos. This is where I introduce you to the Chain Arts system. Try not to get lost as this may get complicated. If you do get lost just check out the video below. The game starts you off with two Chain Arts Cards for Ground Combo and one Chain Arts Cards for Air Combo. After ranking up to higher levels you can purchase more CAC to increase your combo. What are Chain Arts Cards (CAC)? CAC lets you transform into a monster/pet/person etc. from that card. To use a CAC just press and hold forward, then spam your attack button "X" key. Depending on how many CAC's you have equipped, you can unleash a crazy, deadly horde of monsters in one combo cycle. You can equip a total of 7 CAC Ground Cards and a total of 6 CAC Air Combo Cards. These cards do not expire and you can collect them all Pokemon style if you wish. As you get higher level you will be able to purchase higher level CAC and start owning some monsters.

How do you equip CACs? If you press "J" it should bring up your CAC menu. Here you can swap out your card order and cards. There are different tiers for CAC so keep that in mind when you purchase them. They have numbers on the side, so don't go around purchasing  three CACs that only fit in the Tier 1 CAC slots.
