G2 - Guns Gunner Online Closed Beta hosted by Hangame Japan ends in a few days. After playing it for a long time and extensively I have come to my senses that this game is pretty awesome. I must say the game didn't look to fun at first judging how crappy the airplanes looked, but you can change all of that later after earning enough money in missions and buying real jet fighters.
A boss fight!
Introduction
There are only four characters to pick from and none of them were my type so I just picked the first one. After picking your character you are given a choice of two starting newbie airplanes you can pick from. The stats for both planes didn't change much so I just randomly picked the cuter one of course! Anyway, after you decided on what plane and character you like you will be prompted to go in tutorial. Tutorial is pretty easy and will teach you the basics, so you should go do it or you will be forever noob.
Game Modes
Mission Mode - This is the most popular mode you will probably ever seen once the game becomes live. At least until everyone has super over powered ships and would want to go into PvP modes. There are a total five different continents which can also be called chapters. In each Chapter there are a bunch of missions that you have to complete in order. You can complete a mission with three other friends or strangers but you must go through them in order. If you don't then you won't get clearance for the mission and would be sadface because you will need to clear it all over again. So for example if you are on Chapter1-4 but see a game on Chapter1-6 you can still join it but won't get mission clearance and bonus items. So make sure you do your missions in order you can join other peoples that are on the same mission as you and get clearance or if you just want to Rambo your missions that also works. There are a lot of unique Missions in the game some soloable and some not
Free For All - The title explains it all doesn't it? Just kill and Shoot'em All dowwwwn raarrgh! Players vs Players!
Team Mode - Team games are always fun but I never really experienced this yet since everyone is always so busy with missions and pimping their rides. Also the fact that the game is in CBT and not many players to get free kills on.
Island Mission
Controls
The game has controller support which is a big plus but I have never bothered tampering with it. I use a PS2 controller so I just hooked that up on my PC and loaded Joy2Key which is a very popular program for binding keyboard keys to controller. Anyway, the controls are pretty simple spacebar is to use your booster pressing it twice would go into super ultra booster. Directional arrow keys to control your ship you can invert your y axis if you aren't used to playing flying games. A and S button for your primary and secondary weapons. The D key is used for the floating items that you pick up around the map like Missile Ammo, Happy Grenades, Nuclear Bombs, and etc. Shift key to break and slow down which isn't really necessary since your starting airplane flies snail slow. And the most important key in game would be the W key which is your skill key for evasive and offensive maneuvers. I equipped Up key with full loop swing, Down key with U-turn, Right key with S-Turn, and Left key with some other skill that I forgot. Anyway, now lets say there is someone chasing me from behind then I would press and hold the W key then press the up key in which would make my plane loop behind him.
City Night Mission
Gameplay And Item Shop
Gameplay plays like any other flying game I guess there isn't much of a unique feel to it other than the graphics itself. The only thing that makes this game is the big boss fights and probably PvP Dogfights later on once Open Beta is released. There are a lot of missions that you can go through which will have long replay value. A lot of different types of Missiles and Machine Gun load outs you can select from. Gameplay is a little bit like Heroes in the Sky and Space Cowboy but bit more cuter and funner. It looks like a slow paced flying game but it isn't really. There is friendly fire in missions so you better be careful when you shoot those Nuclear missiles. I remember killing my teammate once with it so I know *oppps*.
Sounds and Graphics
Nothing wrong with the sounds ingame other than hearing nuclear spam sound every now and then that can get on your nerves. I really liked how the NPC's give you a brief explanation of each missions. They are still in the process of getting more people to voice over the dialogues can't wait to see how it will turn out in the end. The graphics are really good and it is nice to see that you can change the resolution freely. So HD fans and high resolution people who has a super computer will be able to enjoy this game in their desired resolutions.
Ice Island Mission
Conclusion
So is this game worth trying or not? If you like flying games then you should try it but don't expect much from it at the beginning. You may get a little bored at first when you start the game since the starting missions are pretty easy. The game has a pretty nice shop that will add a lot of replay value. And the wide variety of game modes should last you for awhile if you are looking for a steady online flying game. Though the planes may look like they aren't your taste give it a try you may end up getting hooked on this game. Pre-Open Beta will start on June 17, 2009 and official Open Service will start on July 01, 2009 so better get your controllers ready.
